Acne typically first occurs during adolescence and peaks during puberty but may get worse for people with oily skin. Acne affects not only our skin but also our self-esteem. Acne occurs during adolescence because hormonal changes stimulate the sebaceous glands (oil glands) into producing more sebum (oil), increasing the chance of acne. The oil produced by sebaceous glands does not reach the surface of the skin but is trapped in tiny pores or follicles. While most people outgrow acne in their late teens or early twenties, many continue to be affected much longer.
Acne breakouts have a lifespan of 2-4 weeks. The start of a skin care regimen will treat existing, superficial lesions then move to preventing future breakouts. A continued skin care program will address the root of the problem and make the corrections before they are visible on the skin.
Acne Control
Following are some recommendations for acne control for males who are affected by acne:
- Acne breakouts increase when your skin is exposed to dirt, grease and grim. Keep your hair clean. Dirt from your hair can transfer to your face especially if it is long. If you do wear your hair long you may want to tie it back especially at night to avoid prolonged hair contact with face.
- Avoid things that cause your skin to become dry such as alcohol and smoking. Although drinking and smoking may not cause acne, they can cause your skin to be drier and more likely to breakout.
- Pay attention to shaving. Shaving using poor grooming technique may aggravate and worsen acne. Use a clean, sharp razor to prevent skin irritation.
Premier Skin Care Center has multiple skin care products and procedures to help minimize and control your acne breakouts including Blue light therapy which exposes the skin to a low-intensity blue light source which destroys P. acne.
