After surgery a splint, internal tubes or packing may be used inside your nose while a splint or bandage will be used on the outside to protect and support the new shape while it heals. If packing is used it will be removed after a few days. Facial swelling and bruising, especially around the eyes, is to be expected and will increase, reaching its peak after 2-3 days. Eyes may almost swell shut the day after surgery but most swelling and bruising should disappear within 2 weeks.
It is very important to keep your head elevated above the level of your heart so that swelling and discomfort can be minimized. A dull headache and nose ache is not uncommon and a cold compress should be used for 2-5 days on the bridge of the nose.
Bleeding is not uncommon during the first few days and you should change the dressings as needed. You may have some nasal stuffiness for several weeks but it is very important to not blow your nose as the tissues need to heal.
You will be given specific directions as to when you may resume normal activities. Some activities will be prohibited during the weeks following surgery and sun exposure and exertion should be avoided.
