One of the top 5 male cosmetic surgical procedures is liposuction, also known as lipoplasty. Liposuction is especially good for men who are of normal weight but have isolated pockets of fat that cause certain areas of their body to look disproportionate with the rest of their body. The most common areas for male liposuction are the chest, love handles, and abdomen. These fat deposits are sometimes the result of heredity and usually do not respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction may be performed at any age but the best results are obtained when skin has enough elasticity to achieve a smooth contour following fat removal. Liposuction should not be used to treat obesity or as a substitute for poor diet and exercise. It is also not an effective treatment for cellulite or loose saggy skin. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 12 percent of the liposuction procedures performed in the United States in 2005 were performed on male patients, making it a leading male cosmetic surgery.
Areas that respond well to liposuction include:
- Thighs
- Hips and buttocks
- Abdomen and waist
- Upper arms
- Back
- Inner knee
- Chest area
- Cheeks, chin and neck
- Calves and ankles
