Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, can improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear. It can correct a defect in the ear structure that is present at birth, that becomes apparent with development or it can treat misshapen ears caused by injury. Ear surgery creates a natural shape, while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face. Many individuals with large or protruding ears are self-conscious because of their appearance and many unfortunately are teased when they are young. The optimal time for ear surgery is between ages 5 and 15, when the patient is old enough to understand the process and cooperate with post op care. Our physicians have performed numerous ototplasties on children as well as adult men and women. Correction of even minor deformities can have profound benefits to appearance and self-esteem and confidence in both personal relationships as well as in the work place.
In addition to correcting protruding or large ears surgery can also address the following issues:
- Lop ear-tip seems to fold down and forward
- Cupped ear - usually a very small ear
- Shell ear-curve in the outer rim, or natural folds, are missing
- Large or stretched earlobes
- Lobes with large creases or wrinkles
