Breast Implant - Evaluation

To make your breast augmentation consult a success, plan on discussing the following information with your doctor.

• List of previous surgeries
• Your past and present medical conditions
• Medication(s) you are taking
• The results of a mammography you may have had
• Any history of Breast Cancer in your family

At your breast augmentation consult you will discuss with your doctor the factors that may affect your results such as gaining or losing a significant amount of weight, size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin and the placement of your nipples and areolas (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipples). As part of the breast augmentation consult your breasts will be evaluated, measured, and photographed for your medical records. Your personal desires are key in the decision making process. For your breast augmentation the best implant with the right size, shape and texture will be chosen to achieve your desired effect and may be available for you to try on and see.

The size, shape and type of breast implant recommended for you will be determined by your goals, existing body frame and mass, existing breast tissue and the preferences you and your surgeon discuss. Implants may be placed in a pocket behind the breast tissue or underneath the pectoral muscle. All breast implants include a solid silicone outer shell.

Options for Breast Implants:

• Saline breast implants: Filled with sterile saline water. Saline implants may be pre-filled to a predetermined size. Saline implants may also be filled at the time of surgery to allow for adjustments in implant size.
• Silicone breast implants: Filled with soft, elastic gel. All silicone breast implants are pre-filled and may require a longer incision for implant placement.
